The UAB Blazers begin fall practice Wednesday at the UAB Football Operations Complex in Birmingham and there are quite a few new names on the team as the first official fall roster was released Monday.
Considering the uncertainty surrounding the spread of COVID-19, UAB lost 14 players that were on the spring roster but picked up 24 new enrollees for the fall semester.
There are currently 118 players on the fall roster – reserve running back Da’Quan Godfrey announced Tuesday his decision to opt-out of the season for COVID-related reasons – and the new enrollees include 16 freshmen and eight transfers (four JUCOs).
“Really excited about this group,” head coach Bill Clark said. “Got a lot of good returners, got some new faces and I know they’re very excited about getting started. We’ve talked about starting safely and starting the right way. Being at UAB is a big deal because what better place to be safe than at UAB.”
The 14 players no longer with the team include offensive linemen Jayme Motley-Simmons, Jordan Jamison, Chris Noble and Dilan Sherrod, linebackers Paul Hammond, Kashe Boatner and De’Angelo Jones, defensive backs Rashard Revels and Amahni Spinks, wide receivers Alec Marsch and Tyler Pye, running back Josh Pruitt, long snapper Till Garvin and defensive lineman Vincent Adams.
Of the 24 enrollees, seven were members of UAB’s 2020 signing class which include offensive linemen Trey Bedosky, Zaire Flournoy and Brady Wilson, defensive backs Dacarrion McWilliams (younger brother of defensive lineman Fish McWillians) and Armani Maddox, running back DeWayne McBride and linebacker Allen Merrick.
In addition to four junior college transfer players, the Blazers also received transfers in South Alabama defensive lineman Tyree Turner, Arizona safety Troy Young, Tulane punter Coby Neenan and Union College receiver Earl Wells.
