Bluegrass Crime Stoppers hosts ‘Shootout’ fundraiser with COVID-19 restrictions in place

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Shooters across the Bluegrass helped raise money for Bluegrass Crime Stoppers Saturday morning.

Organizers ensured that the 14th annual “Shootout” fundraiser followed COVID-19 guidelines, so everyone had their temperature taken before entering the gate, filled out a health screening, and were required to wear masks and social distance.

“Yea, I think there’s plenty of safety,” shooting competitor, William Young, said. “We’ve got distancing measures in place. We’ve got masks in place, and unlike other events that I’ve been to we’ve got hand sanitizer so that’s a big leg up for me.”

Crime Stoppers supervisor Donnell Gordon said the event is a great way to raise money for the organization, which encourages people to come forward and give anonymous tips about crimes.

“It’s important because we have these crimes that happen and people may not want to say anything to us right then, but they’ll be willing to send us a tip as an anonymous tip,” Donnell said. “That’s really important. We get a lot of tips that come in to help us solve these cases.”

He also thanked the community for its support.

“We just want to thank the community for providing tips that come in, the anonymous tips that help move a case forward,” Gordon said. “We also want to thank our board members who volunteer their time to be on the board to continue Crime Stoppers, and all the donors that decided to donate this year during the rough season, the 2020 season, just want to thank them for their kindness to be able to reach out to us and provide that assistance to us.”

Event coordinators hope to raise $15,000 this year through team signups, the silent auction, and raffle.
