Gov. Edwards cautious of state’s progress in COVID-19 fight as officials monitor activity in the tropics

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Governor John Bel Edwards said during a news conference Thursday, Aug. 20 state has made progress in its battle with the novel coronavirus but cautioned the fight was far from over.

Edwards said Louisiana saw a “nice drop” in hospitalizations Thursday with 73 COVID-19 patients leaving the hospital. The governor also said the number of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 was just over 1,000 as compared to 1,600 in the middle of July. Watch the governor’s full news briefing in the video below.

He also announced that as of Aug. 14, the state’s positivity rate for COVID-19 had dropped to 8.7%. However, Edwards said he is concerned as to whether cases will continue to decrease citing there are now more people moving around the state than at the beginning of the pandemic.

On Thursday, the Louisiana Department of Health reported an additional 1,034 cases of COVID-19 in the state.
