As the state is experiencing a surge of COVID-19 cases, northeast Louisiana numbers continue a steady climb.
Over the past 10 days, 854 positive tests were returned throughout the 12-parish Region 8.
Ouachita, the population center and medical hub for the region, is reporting 495 new resident cases in the same time period.
The second-highest contributor is Madison Parish with 62 cases added in 10 days. With 393 total cases as of Monday compared to a 10,951 census-estimated population in July 2019, 3.6% of Madison’s population has tested positive for COVID-19.
In Ouachita Parish, the 2019 census-estimated population was 153,279 while Monday numbers show 2,694 confirmed cases. Based on this data, 1.8% of Ouachita has tested positive.
In a previous interview, Dr. Frank Welch, Medical Director for the Bureau of Community Preparedness for the State of Louisiana, explained expanded testing throughout the region coupled with a smaller population leads to many cases being identified that would not have been otherwise.

When the first wave of COVID-19 spread throughout the state’s population centers, less testing was available and testing was limited to those who were extremely sick with no other illness, already hospitalized or who were in certain high-risk categories.
Through the most recent data released, hospitalizations have decreased since the end of June and the number of ventilators in use in the region remains consistent.
As of Monday’s main report, there are 80 deaths reported in Ouachita Parish. However, a Monday update from the Louisiana Department of Health on the racial breakdown of the deceased reflects 81 deaths — 46 Black residents and 35 white residents.
Black residents of Ouachita Parish represent 56.79% of the parish deaths and are 37.6% of the total population. White people are 59.76% of the population and are 43.21% of the deaths.
In Union Parish, 26 deaths have been reported. They are nine Black residents, 16 white residents and one resident with unknown race.
Demographic data for the deceased is only available in parishes with 25 or more reported deaths. Across the 12 parishes of Region 8, there are 179 total deaths in the latest regional update — 97 Black residents, 81 white residents and one person of unknown race.
