EL RENO, Okla. –
Sox of Love put on a free laundry event Sunday at Best Laundry in El Reno.
The first 35 families who showed up received $15 worth of free laundry and a whole lot more.
“A lot of people we’re serving, they’ve been affected by COVID-19,” Sox of Love founder Tamara Nelson said.
The pandemic has led people to weigh some tough financial decisions.
“They’re trying to decide, ‘Can I feed my family and wash my clothes? Can I got to the grocery store? Can I pick up my medicine?’” Nelson said. “So laundry gets further and further down on the needs list.”
Sox of Love normally holds free laundry events once a month. They’re adjusting their schedule to accommodate the overflowing need.
The metro non-profit made a stop Saturday in Del City. Sox of Love stopped in El Reno for a back-to-school event.
People not only left with their clothes cleaned, but a meal, books and healthcare information if they need it.
“This is more than just laundry,” Nelson said. “We’re trying to touch the human behind our mission because we want everybody to know that they’re loved, they’re worthy, they’re cared for, and that they’re remembered.”
The Pet Food Pantry was also onsite, handing out free food. Nelson said she reached out to the group when she found out that some people who received meals from her free laundry days were serving them to their pets while they went hungry.
“That need is there, and I’d like people to spend their money on their needs, their medical needs, their laundry needs, whatever it is, and let us help with the pet food,” Pet Food Pantry Executive Director Candace Beaty said.
Each free laundry days costs Sox of Love $800.
They’re run completely on donations, and if you’d like to help, you can donate on their website.
