Marie A. Barnwell, 88, matriarch who created many memorable traditions

HAMPTON — Marie A. Barnwell, 88, transitioned Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2020, at Sentara Careplex. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, quintessential matriarch and faithful member of Greater Walters AME Zion Church.

She was a knowledgeable and well-versed woman of God whose ambitious youth birthed a life of love, marriage, family, academic/professional success and travel. She will be missed for her radiant smile, nurturing spirit, lesson-bearing stories and quick wit.

Marie married her childhood sweetheart, David A. Barnwell Sr., Feb. 24, 1951. She took great pride in this union with the love of her life for 59 ½ years. “The lovebirds” led the family by example through selfless actions, timeless words and memorable traditions.

She is survived by “The Reasons” children, David A. Barnwell Jr. (Paula) of Newport News, Dinardo “Dino” Barnwell of Guangzhou, China, Yettah A. Rogers and Davondra “Kicky” Harper of Hampton; grandchildren, David Barnwell III of Hampton, Dameca Howard (Shanard) of Newport News, T’Naia Felder (Terrance) of Accokeek, Maryland, Kevin Barnwell of Newport News, Eboni Barnwell of Chesterfield, Christopher Harper II (Lynette) of Williamsburg, Armand Harper of Newport News, Jevon Harper of Lithonia, Georgia, and Yolanda Harper of Hampton; great-grandson of the home, Diondre Barnwell; a host of great-grandchildren; devoted nephew/son, Ngoya “Booda” Vice (Hillary) of Charleston, South Carolina; and a plethora of extended family and friends.

Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Due to Covid-19, a celebration of life for Marie A. Barnwell will be private. Masks are required with strict social distancing in place.
