COVID-19 deaths reach an all-time high in Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne)  —  A record 201 Tennesseans died due to COVID-19 related complications this past week.

An all-time high of 61 deaths were reported this past Friday alone.

A review of county level data shows the deaths are widespread. No one city or county reported an unusual spike in deaths Friday. However, fully one-third of Tennessee’s 95 counties reported one or more COVID-19 fatalities that day.

Tennessee has reported a total of 1,567 deaths since the pandemic began in March.

Widely cited projections by researchers at the University of Washington predict Tennessee could see as many as 3,500 COVID-19 deaths by November 1.

On the plus side, the number of new infections being reported statewide has now fallen five weeks in a row. New confirmed cases peaked mid-July at just under 16,000 cases over seven days. This past week just 9600 cases were recorded.
