An elderly Houston woman was accused this week of tussling with police officers — squeezing one by the testicles and kicking the other in the head — while she was knowingly infected with COVID-19, according to Harris County court records.
Nkachi Ekeogu, 79, was charged Tuesday with one count of assaulting a peace officer. She remains in Harris County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
The officer, only identified as J. Zavala, was attempting to detain Ekeogu at her home around noon Monday in the 9700 block of Leawood Boulevard when she scratched him on the forearm, according to an incident report filed by Houston police. The report did not specify the agency for which Zavala worked.
The scratch broke the skin and caused him to bleed, police said. She then reached for the officer’s testicles, squeezing “real hard” and pulling down on them, police said.
“Ofc Zavala states that he felt pain in that moment and is still feeling pain hours later,” the report states.
The brawl continued even after a Houston police officer responded. According to the report, Ekeogu scratched, punched, spit on and “grabbed on” both officers. She also kicked the responding Houston police officer in the face. She did so while knowingly infected with COVID-19, police said.
Officer Zavala initially tried to take her into custody with an emergency detention order. The report indicates police planned to take her to the NeuroPsychiatric Center (NPC) at Ben Taub Hospital.
They instead filed charges because police took her to the same hospital last week, the report said. She had been admitted under emergency detention order but later released.
